I did not pick up this album because I was in the Navy on a ship in the ‘70s when it came out. Following quickly on the heels of their career-defining Aqualung and Thick as a Brick, Ian Anderson's Jethro Tull demonstrated that their musical and thematic ambitions were as muscular as ever on 1973's Passion Play. My headline could very well apply to the entire Tull catalog; a renaissance faire with Marshall stacks, right? These plays could go for hours over a period of days. Interestingly enough, my original Chrysalis pressing from '74 has a muddy midrange that gives the album more punch but with less detail.
